Point culture : Luddites were workers who destroyed machinery in the 19th century, especially in cotton mills, because they considered that it threatened their jobs. The movement was a key episode in the industrial revolution and lasted from 1811 to 1816. Luddism took its name from Ned Ludd, a weaver (= un tisserand) who once broke two knitting machines (= machines à tisser) in a fit of rage and went on to become a hero of the proletariat. A « luddite » has come to be used as a synonym for a « technophobe ».
